The interest of European researchers’ in the concept of engagement in studying has developed from the field of work psychology and has been considered to be a factor conditioning the level of academic achievements. The relationship between the level of engagement in studying and the personality of academic youth has become an equally important subject in further studies. Based on research undertaken till this day, it was hypothesized that there are correlations between the levels of engagement in studying and personality traits, especially Conscientiousness and Extraversion. The study has been conducted on a group of 133 students with the use of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale for Students (UWES-S) by Schaufeli, Bakker and Salanova and the Personality Inventory NEOPI-R by Costa and McCrae. The obtained results have confirmed the hypothesized relationships between the students level of engagement in studying and their personality traits. The high level of engagement in studying is correlated with Conscientiousness and Extraversion while the low level of engagement in studying is correlated with Neuroticism. Gender differences in the level of engagement in studying have been discovered as well as the lower levels of engagement among students of consecutive years were observed. The acquired results can serve to reinforce the educational potential of Polish universities and support the students’ personal development. Future research might concentrate on performing a lexical analysis of the polish definition of engagement in studying, revealing factors enhancing the engagement in studying and on verifying the hypothesis of declining engagement in the course of studies.
