Stereotypy społeczne i ich konsekwencje dotyczące osób starszych w Polsce

Abstract

W społeczeństwie istnieje wiele stereotypów. W znaczącej mierze powstają jako sposób uzasadnienia własnych uprzedzeń względem danej grupy społecznej. Jednym z nich jest stereotyp starości — większość z nas formułuje swoje poglądy na temat starości na podstawie niewielkiej znajomości tematu, argumentując swoje postępowanie oparte na przesądach, bądź poglądach innych ludzi. Głównym celem mojej pracy jest ukazanie szerokiego wachlarza istniejących stereotypów osób starszych w Polsce i jak one sposób wpływają na funkcjonowanie tych osób w społeczeństwie. W pracy zostało rozpatrzone, czym jest starość w różnych aspektach i czym się charakteryzuje ona jako kolejny etap życia. Rozpatrzono podstawowe stereotypy dotyczące osób starszych. Zaprezentowano również wyniki badania stereotypów wśród młodzieży, przeprowadzonego wśród uczniów II Liceum Ogólnokształcącego im. Marii Konopnickiej w Nowym Sączu. Badania potwierdziły, że postrzeganie osób starszych oparte jest na niewiedzy i na stereotypach, w znacznej mierze negatywnych. Istotny na to wpływ ma zbyt mała częstotliwość kontaktów osób młodych ze starszymi ludźmi. Stereotypy oraz duża ilość problemów, z jakimi borykają się osoby starsze, w dużym stopniu utrudniają ich funkcjonowanie w społeczeństwie.

Modern society is full of stereotypes. They are adopted mainly to justify one’s ill-founded prejudices against specific types of individuals. One of the most common stereotypes is the old-age stereotype – the majority of societydraws inferences about the elderly based on poor knowledge of them, supporting their view with prejudices or other people’s views. The main purpose of this paper is to show the wide range of stereotypes with respect to the old age in Poland and to pinpoint their impact on the functioning of the elderly in the society. The paper defines the old age from various perspectives and discusses it as one of the life stages. Additionally, the results of the survey on stereotypes held by adolescents are presented. The survey, which was carried out amongst the students of the Secondary School of General Education No. 2 in Nowy Sącz, proved that the perception of the elderly is based not on genuine knowledge of them, but on mostly negative stereotypes. This is caused by the fact that young people spend little time with the elderly. Stereotyping and other problems the elderly struggle with negatively affect their functioning in the society.
