This thesis addresses the topic of transgenerational determinants of close relationships, focusing on the associations between the structure and cohesion of the family of origin and communication styles in adult romantic relationships. The study was conducted within a quantitative framework on a sample of 100 individuals who were in either marital or informal relationships. To verify the formulated correlational and moderational hypotheses, two diagnostic tools were utilized: the Family Assessment Scales (Skale Oceny Rodziny – SOR) and the Marital Communication Questionnaire (Kwestionariusz Komunikacji Małżeńskiej – KKM). The primary objective of the study was to demonstrate that balanced family system functioning co-occurs with support-based communication, whereas maladaptive patterns—such as enmeshment or chaos—are associated with a more frequent use of a deprecating style toward the partner. The findings confirmed the significant role of relationship duration and participation in therapy as moderators; the analyses suggest that in groups with a longer relationship duration and among individuals attending therapy, the associations between the assessment of the family of origin and partner communication were weaker. The conclusions from the study indicate that although experiences from the family of origin are linked to relational competencies, factors such as relationship duration and therapeutic support co-occur with a diminished significance of these primary patterns. The collected data may provide valuable substantive support for couples therapists and professionals involved in psychological counseling within the area of working with intergenerational transmission.
