Self-esteem and coping styles are important psychological factors related to the functioning of individuals undergoing outpatient treatment for substance use disorders. The study was conducted among patients receiving outpatient treatment for addiction to psychoactive substances, and the hypotheses were tested by analysing the level of self-esteem, dominant coping styles, and the relationships between these variables. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), and an original sociodemographic questionnaire were used. The results showed that low or average self-esteem occurred more frequently than high self-esteem in the studied group. A positive relationship was confirmed between the level of self-esteem and the task-oriented coping style, which means that higher self-esteem was associated with a more active approach to difficulties. A negative relationship was also found between self-esteem and the emotion-oriented coping style, indicating that lower self-esteem was associated with a stronger focus on experienced emotions. No relationship was confirmed between self-esteem and the avoidance-oriented coping style. The findings indicate the importance of strengthening realistic self-esteem and developing constructive coping strategies in the therapy of individuals with substance use disorders.
