The paper addresses the issue of architectural technical debt (ATD) resulting from suboptimal design decisions. This phenomenon leads to system degradation and a drastic increase in maintenance costs, which can consume up to 70% of the total software lifecycle expenditure. Unlike classic code debt, ATD mainly affects the internal characteristics of software, hindering its evolution. The study was conducted using a structured literature review, analyzing 15 publications from the Scopus database in detail. It was identified that the use of advanced metrics (such as the PageRank algorithm or DSM matrices) and the analysis of architectural smells, including cyclic, unstable, and hub dependencies, are key to the effective detection of ATD. The main thesis of the paper is that optimal debt mitigation requires systematic refactoring based on the rigorous application of design principles (especially the inversion of dependencies principle from the SOLID paradigm) and deep system decomposition. Article provides a missing, synthetic link between the impact of architectural smells and specific refactoring prioritization methods. However, the original contribution of the work is a critical assessment of this mechanized approach and an emphasis on the socio-technical and business context of software evolution.
