The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between executive functions, difficulties in emotion regulation, and interoceptive awareness among young adults. The study was based on the assumption that cognitive, emotional, and bodily processes constitute interconnected components of self-regulation. The sample consisted of 153 participants aged between 18 and 20 years. Executive functions were assessed using the Color Trails Test (CTT), difficulties in emotion regulation were measured with the DERS-8 scale, and interoceptive awareness was assessed using the MAIA-2 questionnaire. Spearman’s rho correlations and mediation analysis were applied. The results showed that lower executive functioning co-occurred with greater difficulties in emotion regulation and lower levels of interoceptive awareness. A very strong association was also found between difficulties in emotion regulation and interoceptive awareness. However, the hypothesis assuming a mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between executive functions and interoceptive awareness was not supported. Furthermore, the interoceptive awareness dimensions related to self-regulation, attention regulation, and body trusting showed the strongest associations with difficulties in emotion regulation, as well as significant associations with executive functions. The findings highlight the importance of the relationships between executive functions, emotion regulation, and interoceptive awareness in the self-regulation processes of young adults.
