The aim of this study was to analyse the relationships between empathy, compassion for others, and altruism among psychology students, as well as to determine whether gender differentiates the level of these variables. The study had a cross-sectional design and was based on a correlational-differential model; it involved 127 psychology students, and the measures used included the Perth Empathy Scale, the Compassion for Others Scale, and the A-N(S) Altruism Questionnaire. The analyses conducted allowed for a partial verification of the research hypotheses. No significant relationship was found between empathy and altruism. It was confirmed, however, that empathy was significantly related to compassion for others, with these relationships being particularly evident for the cognitive aspects of empathy. The analysis also showed that altruism was positively associated with kindness, common humanity, and the overall level of compassion for others, although the strength of these relationships was low. With regard to gender differences, women obtained a higher level of overall empathy than men, whereas no significant differences were found in altruism or compassion for others. The obtained results indicate that, in the studied group, the closest relationship occurred between empathy and compassion for others.en
