The aim of this study was to examine whether stress coping styles are associated with illness acceptance in patients with rheumatic diseases. Participants were chronically ill individuals recruited through online focus groups. The CISS questionnaire was used to assess stress coping styles and the Illness Acceptance Scale (AIS). Additionally, a short survey regarding demographic data and the course of the illness was administered. The results indicated that individuals who more frequently used a task-focused coping style had a higher level of illness acceptance. An emotion-focused coping style was associated with lower acceptance. No clear correlation was found for the avoidant coping style, although engaging in alternative activities correlated with lower acceptance. Higher levels of pain were also found to be associated with difficulties adapting to the illness. The results suggest that stress coping may play a significant role in the process of adapting to rheumatic disease.en
