The current has two major objectives. The first objective is to describe the modern approaches to material requirements planning and discuss the main functions and features of the contemporary computer9based production planning systems. The second objective is to describe the current production planning process at Designmaster LCC, the furniture manufacturer located in Lviv, Ukraine, and explain how the computational logic offered by some of the contemporary Advanced Planning Systems could be used to improve the performance of the production planning process at the company. The current thesis is based on the course literature, information collected at the illustrated company and author’s observations. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter illustrates a general approach to production planning and control and outlines the major features of various MRP9based systems. The second chapter describes the Designmaster LLC, providing information on the company’s history, organizational structure, product offerings, competitors and the company’s production facilities, and processes. The last chapter describes the company’s current production planning, provides the critique of the process and suggests an alternative planning approach consistent with the computational logic used by APS systems. A numeric example, using the product and process data collected at the company, illustrates the proposed approach.
