The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between problematic smartphone use and mindfulness levels among young adults. Mindfulness was considered as a relatively stable psychological trait, analyzed both in terms of the overall score and its specific dimensions. The research group consisted of 101 individuals aged 18 to 35, residing in Poland. To measure the variables, the standardized Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and an original scale were used, the internal consistency of which was verified using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The results of the analyses revealed a negative correlation between the examined variables: individuals characterized by a higher index of problematic smartphone use simultaneously exhibited a lower level of mindfulness. The obtained data suggest that the mere use of mobile devices does not necessarily pose a threat; what is crucial, however, is the nature of this use - especially when it becomes automatic, compulsive, difficult to control, or serves to divert attention from current experiences. Total screen time and social media activity emerged as particularly significant predictors of problematic use. Additionally, the study observed that some respondents intentionally underreported their declared smartphone usage time out of shame, which further underscores the significance and scale of the diagnosed problem.
