Okres późnej adolescencji (15–19 lat) należy do etapów życia szczególnie narażonych na rozwój objawów depresyjnych. Dynamiczne zmiany biologiczne, poznawcze, emocjonalne i społeczne, połączone z wysoką presją szkolną i brakiem systemowego wsparcia psychologicznego w polskich szkołach średnich, sprzyjają nasileniu subklinicznych i klinicznych stanów depresyjnych.
The period of late adolescence (15–19 years) is one of the life stages particularly vulnerable to the development of depressive symptoms. Dynamic biological, cognitive, emotional, and social changes, combined with high academic pressure and a lack of systematic psychological support in Polish high schools, contribute to the intensification of both subclinical and clinical depressive states. Physical activity is one of the strongest modifiable protective factors against depressiveness in youth. At the same time, self-esteem serves as a central mediating variable. The research employed a diagnostic survey method. The empirical study was conducted on a group of high school students from the Zachodniopomorskie Province, using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), the Children’s Depression Inventory-2 (CDI-2), and an author-designed questionnaire concerning physical activity. The obtained results allowed verification of the mediation hypothesis and provided practical implications for depression prevention in secondary schools. A total of 100 participants took part in the study. Significant negative correlations were found between physical activity and the severity of depressive symptoms, a strong positive correlation between physical activity and self-esteem, and a negative correlation between self-esteem and depressive symptoms. The findings indicate that regular physical activity, combined with deliberate enhancement of self-esteem, constitutes a realistic and effective strategy for depression prevention in secondary schools.en
