The subject of this study is the relationship between emotional intelligence and the sense of life purpose in a group of individuals struggling with addiction. Comparative research was conducted using the paper-and-pencil method among patients at a Therapy Center for Addiction and a purposively selected control group of non-addicted individuals. Statistical analysis confirmed the existence of significant positive correlations between the general level of emotional intelligence and most dimensions of the sense of life purpose, particularly the sense of purpose and control over one's own existence. It was demonstrated that addicted individuals exhibit a significantly lower level of emotional competencies and a lower sense of agency compared to the non-addicted group. A correlation was also observed between the duration of therapy and the level of existential void experienced by individuals addicted to alcohol. The obtained results indicate that deficits in emotional regulation may be significantly related to the functioning of addicted individuals and the recovery process. The findings suggest the importance of enriching therapeutic interventions with activities aimed at developing emotional competencies and strengthening the sense of influence over one's own life, which may constitute an important element of the social readaptation process for patients.
