This master’s thesis addresses the issue of stress in police work, a problem that significantly affects the effectiveness of duty performance, the mental and physical condition of officers, and consequently, the safety of citizens. The aim was to present the scale of the phenomenon, its sources, consequences, and coping strategies. The theoretical part outlines the role of the Police in the security system and the specifics of a profession requiring responsibility, discipline, and loyalty. Both positive aspects of service (stable employment, financial benefits, prestige) and stress-inducing factors such as work overload, shift work, exposure to violence and death, or the risk of injury and loss of life were discussed. Stress mechanisms were presented based on Hans Selye’s general adaptation syndrome and Lazarus and Folkman’s transactional theory. The consequences of chronic stress include burnout, anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and, in extreme cases, self-aggressive behaviors. Personality traits and coping strategies were highlighted, with task-oriented strategies being the most adaptive. The conclusions show that stress in police work cannot be eliminated but its negative effects can be reduced through psychological support, preventive measures, organizational culture promoting openness, and developing psychophysical resilience. Caring for the mental well-being of officers is a prerequisite for the effective functioning of the state security system.en
