The aim of this study was to assess the level of parenting stress and coping strategies among mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder. The study included 106 mothers of children with ASD. The Parenting Stress Index – Short Form (PSI-4-SF), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) were used. The analysis focused on the relationships between coping styles, maternal age, the number of children in the family, and the level of parenting and perceived stress. The results showed that mothers of children with ASD obtained the highest mean scores in task-oriented coping. However, no significant relationships were found between coping styles and the level of parenting and perceived stress. At the same time, it was confirmed that maternal age significantly differentiated the level of stress. Younger mothers obtained higher scores in parenting stress, difficult child behaviors, dysfunctional parent–child interaction, the total parenting stress index, and perceived stress. It was also shown that the level of parenting and perceived stress increased with the number of children in the family. However, no relationship was confirmed between the number of children and the intensity of particular coping styles. The obtained results indicate the need for special support for younger mothers and mothers raising a larger number of children, especially in the areas of psychoeducation, psychological support, and strengthening parental resources.en
