The aim of the study was to characterize school phobia in the context of early school-aged children's functioning. The research focused on the determinants and manifestations of school phobia and on the role of individual, family, and school-related factors in its development and persistence. The study employed semi-structured interviews with parents and teachers, observations of children in the school environment, analysis of psychological and educational records, and standardized diagnostic tools, including the School Anxiety Scale for Children, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the Anxiety Behavior Observation Scale, and the STAIC and IDS-2 tests. The findings showed that all examined children experienced elevated levels of school anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms, and emotional and social difficulties. STAIC results confirmed increased state and trait anxiety, while IDS-2 results indicated reduced cognitive efficiency under stress despite age-appropriate intellectual abilities. The results suggest that interactions among individual, family, and school-related factors are crucial in the development and maintenance of school phobia. In addition, a cycle of anxiety and avoidance contributes to the persistence of difficulties and limitations in educational functioning.
