The aim of the present study is to examine the relationship between attachment styles, the sense of existential emptiness, and the severity of eating disorder symptoms in women. The theoretical framework of the study is based on psychodynamic concepts. The study includes 114 women aged between 20 and 45 years. The following research instruments are used: Mieczysław Plopa’s Attachment Styles Questionnaire, the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), and the Purpose in Life Test (PIL). The obtained results demonstrate statistically significant relationships between the analyzed variables. Secure attachment style correlates negatively with the severity of eating disorder symptoms and positively with the sense of meaning in life. Insecure attachment styles — anxious-ambivalent and avoidant — are associated with greater severity of eating disorder symptoms and higher levels of existential emptiness. It is also found that increased severity of eating disorder symptoms co-occurs with a lower sense of meaning in life and greater existential frustration. The findings confirm the importance of relational and emotional factors in the development and maintenance of eating disorders. The obtained data suggest that the analysis of attachment styles and existential emptiness may be of significant importance in the diagnostic process and in planning psychotherapy for individuals suffering from eating disorders.en
