Ekspozycja współwystępuje jednak z katastrofizacją i ruminacjami.
This theoretical and empirical master's thesis examines the relationship between exposure to true crime content and levels of anxiety and sense of security in young adults. The theoretical framework is based on Spielberg's concept of fear and Gerbner's Cultivation Theory. The study (CAWI survey) was conducted on a sample of 122 people (aged 18-35, 93% women), using the GAD-7 questionnaire, a fragment of the Cognitive Distortion Scale, and an original survey. The results did not show a significant correlation between the frequency of consumption and the level of anxiety and severity of distortions. However, exposure co-occurs with catastrophizing and rumination. It has been shown that it is the vividness and immersiveness of the format, rather than its “dose,” that affects the well-being of the audience. It was noted that the use of true crime formats to build an illusory sense of security has the opposite effect, fueling a spiral of anxiety in the subjects. In addition, the subjects experienced Mean World Syndrome (increased distrust), which particularly affects women who treat this content as an evolutionary threat simulator. In summary, the specificity and immersiveness of true crime materials have a negative impact on cognitive functioning, regardless of the time of their reception. The study emphasizes the need for education in digital hygiene and the responsibility of creators.
