This research, based on a multiple case study, concerns six women aged 35 to 47 whose shared experience is raising a child with selective mutism. Its aim was to determine the mothers' functioning in terms of their stress-coping style, parental attitudes, and life orientation. Three instruments were used in the study: the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS), the Parental Attitude Scale (SPR), and the Sense of Coherence Questionnaire (SOC-29). The analysis of data obtained from the interviews and the questionnaire results made it possible to formulate the following conclusions: the mothers studied display varied stress-coping styles, adopt an accepting attitude toward their child while showing neither excessive demands nor excessive protectiveness, and their attitude is generally consistent. Five of the women have an average sense of coherence, and one a high one. All of them wish to help their child cope with anxiety and undertake concrete actions to do so.
